Elect Judge Sonni Choi Williams

For Will County Circuit Judge, Subcircuit 3

The Illinois Supreme Court showed its confidence in Sonni Choi Williams by appointing her to the vacancy of Judge John Anderson, and on February 10, 2025, Supreme Court Justice Mary Kay O’Brien swore in Sonni Choi Williams as the first Asian-American to serve on the Will County Circuit Court. Judge Williams is currently assigned to the domestic relations division and has hit the ground running in serving the residents of Will County. Prior to her appointment, Sonni Choi Williams dedicated over 25 years to serving the public, including serving as the City Attorney for the City of Lockport for almost eight years and nearly 18 years as an in-house municipal lawyer for the City of Peoria. She is not only a trailblazer on the bench, but she has the distinct honor of being the first woman lawyer of color and first Asian-American to serve as the President of the Illinois State Bar Association in its 148-year history.

Sonni Choi Williams
Fair

Sonni’s sense of fairness comes from her humble upbringing as an immigrant from Seoul, South Korea. Her parents labored hard as blue-collar workers to put food on the table and provide for their family in the best way that they knew how. Her mother cleaned restaurants late at night (sometimes with Sonni’s help during her high school senior year), and her father worked in the press room at a local newspaper. Sonni’s parents raised their children to work hard, to have empathy for others, to give back to the community, and to be grateful for all their blessings, but they knew that others are not so fortunate. On the bench, Judge Sonni Choi Williams strives to be fair to everyone, regardless of their positions or socioeconomic situation.

Balanced

Judge Williams has dedicated her legal career and now, as a judge, to ensuring a balanced judicial system, no matter someone's socioeconomic background. Prior to her appointment to the bench, she served on the Board of Prairie State Legal Services, the largest not-for-profit agency in the State that provides free legal services to the vulnerable members of the community, including senior citizens and those who cannot afford private attorneys. Her service to the PSLS Board and other organizations, such as the Illinois Bar Foundation, which helps provide grants to organizations that help the vulnerable and voiceless equal access to justice, provides Judge Sonni Choi Williams the balance needed on the bench by being elected Will County Circuit Judge for the 3rd Subcircuit.

Impartial

In her 25-plus years as a lawyer, Judge Sonni Choi Williams has been a public servant, serving as a prosecutor and also as a defense attorney. This provides Judge Williams with an impartial perspective, so she does not favor the prosecution or plaintiff over the defense or defendant or vice-versa. She has extensive experience in criminal and civil matters in state and federal courts. In addition, she has argued cases before the 3rd District Appellate Court, the Illinois Supreme Court, and the federal 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. Before her appointment to the bench, Sonni had served as a Hearing Panel chair member on the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission (ARDC), overseeing disciplinary cases against attorneys on allegations of misconduct.
